Covid-19: The Impact on Cinema

Since the start of the pandemic, cinemas have taken a serious hit. They have been closed for a year now with only a brief opening in August. With England starting to open back up to normality, what does this mean for our beloved cinemas? As more and more people choose to go out for dinner or down to their local pub, will cinemas be forgotten altogether with the continued growth of streaming services?

Since every business got locked down at the start of March back in 2020, over a year later we are still handling the repercussions of Covid-19. Cinema’s and the entertainment industry, in particular, took a big hit. With not only cinemas being shut down to the public, with all film productions being halted all over the world. From this cinema struggled to reopen back in August for the brief moment we got a glimpse back into our normal lives, as no new productions were finalised and ready for release, many cinemas had to dust off their old reels and show older films from the past 10 years. This brought back some excitement to regular film enthusiasts as many people could relive the cinema experience of their beloved films such as Christopher Nolan's epics which deserved to be showcased on the big screens all to small indie films which could have their shining moment.

With Covid-19, many people subscribed to more streaming services, such as Disney +, Amazon Prime, Netflix and the most recent team-up of Warner Brothers and HBO Max.  With the increase in popularity in streaming services, more and more popular films are being released each week, this has made it easier for film lovers to watch new and popular films. Not to mention they can do this from the comfort of their homes, either watching a film from the beds or sitting on the sofa with some store-bought popcorn. Now that cinemas are starting to reopen, will viewers not want to go to the cinema as much?

So why is it important to return back to our local cinemas?

Simple, to help support your local community, you may not realise it, but cinemas help the economy and your own community. With offering local jobs in your area, using suppliers to offer all those tasty cinema snacks and not to mention when a new blockbuster hits the screens it brings communities together, sat in one of the first showings of Avengers: Endgame, the atmosphere was electric and complete strangers were cheering and crying together.

We also can’t forget supporting film production houses and our favourite directors, producers, writers etc. Without the love of cinema, filmmakers will lose their passion for creating films for the big screen. By returning to the cinema, we are helping to show the love for film is still very much strong. With the anticipated films due to come out within the next year and a half, they deserved to be shown on the big screen in their full glory.

Instead of sitting at home on the sofa watching a rerun of a film you have seen a 100 times, whilst sat scrolling on social media, why not return to the cinema and get utterly transfixed on a piece of film for 2 hours. Studies have shown going to the cinema can help improve your focus, productivity and stimulate the brain making you more motivated.

Here are some other benefits to help pressurised you:

  • You don’t have to keep turning the volume up - Most cinemas have surround sound, making the experience 10 x better. No one can try to talk over the tv. You can be fully surrounded by the sound and get to fully experience the score without interruption.
  • The big screen - Do we even need a reason why viewing a blockbuster movie is always going to be better when it's blown up 30 feet high?
  • The snacks - Yes, they might be a little bit pricey, but can you really beat classic cinema popcorn.
  • The latest previews - You can watch the latest trailers and know the latest films due to come out.
  • The magic - Movies create a unique experience, they help us to focus and be lost in the acting and visuals for up to 3 hours, with suspense keeping us on our toes and love and comedy making us feel good.

Cinemas can also be like your home viewing experience with cinemas offering alcoholic drinks, you can cuddle with your loved one, where you can lay down and you can eat and drink, so really it's just like being at home.
